FAQs – Your Silt Sock Questions Answered

Do I need trenching to install your silt socks?

No, you don’t need to install trenching. The silt socks we manufacture and supply are easy to install, plus they can be installed directly onto your construction site with no additional preparation work.

What are silt socks filled with?

The right filler for your silt sock will depend on your requirements, but they are typically filled with aggregate, coarse sand, sawdust, or wood chips. One of the factors to consider in relation to the filling for your silt socks is weight. Sand, for example, is heavy, making silt socks filled with sand heavy to lift. Sawdust or wood chips, on the other hand, are much lighter.

Can you supply custom erosion control socks?

We design and manufacture silt socks, so, yes, we can custom manufacture according to your requirements. This includes customising the length of the silt sock, and we can supply filled or unfilled.

Can I drive over silt socks?

An erosion sock is designed to manage and control sediment run-off on your construction site, but driving over them could cause damage, so it is not recommended. For situations where you need the ability to drive over the area where you need the silt sock installed, an alternative solution will need to be used.

What are common applications for silt socks?

You can use a silt sock to prevent sediment from your construction site from flowing into a drain on the road. They can also be placed at the bottom of fences to keep sediment with your site so it can be properly managed and dealt with.

What level of sediment can a silt sock deal with?

You will need to take action when the level of sediment reaches halfway up the height of your silt sock. Over this level and you run the risk of the sediment spilling over the top of the sock. Common approaches for dealing with this situation include removing the build-up of sediment or installing another silt sock on top of the first to increase the overall height.

Do I need to replace a silt sock if it is ripped?

Whether or not you need to replace a silt sock depends on the extent of the damage. If the rip or tear is small, you may be able to repair it by “stitching” the material together with heavy-duty plastic zip ties. Large rips will be more difficult to repair, so you should consider replacing the silt sock in these situations.

Can I install silt socks on a slope?

You can, although you should install wooden stakes into the ground for the silt sock to rest up against, preventing it from rolling down the slope. Install the stake at an angle to prevent the silt sock from pushing it over, particularly if it has a heavy filler such as sand.
